It's a fine choice — but it's not always the right one for your room. ## When bright white works Modern interiors with crisp white walls, contemporary kitchens, north-facing rooms that need every photon of light. Bright white reads sharp and clean. ## When to soften Period properties with original cornicing, warm wall colours, south-facing rooms with strong afternoon light. A 'silk white' or 'pure white' softens the contrast and stops the shutters from screaming at the room. ## Stained timber Underused, beautifully effective. A walnut or oak stain on a study, library or principal bedroom adds warmth painted finishes can't. It does ask for restraint elsewhere in the room. Test against your actual walls Always view a sample at your window at 11am and again at 4pm. Newcastle light shifts dramatically through the day, and what looks crisp at noon can look grey by tea-time.
