A short guide. ## Victorian sashes (1850–1900) Tall, narrow, often with a horn detail at the top. Tier-on-tier full-height panels with a mid-rail aligned to the original meeting rail of the sash is the historically correct call. 76mm louvres. ## Edwardian bays (1900–1914) Wider proportions, larger panes. Full-height panels in 89mm louvres feel right — generous, calm, never fussy. Stick to off-whites that flatter the room's original cornicing. ## 1930s semis Casement windows with leaded lights and stained-glass detail. Café-style shutters keep the upper detail visible while solving privacy from the street. ## Listed buildings If your property is listed or in a conservation area, internal shutters usually don't require consent — but it's always worth a call to the council first.
