    Most people default to bright white shutters because that's what they've seen in showrooms. It's a fine choice — but it's not always the right one for your room.

    When bright white works

    Modern interiors with crisp white walls, contemporary kitchens, north-facing rooms that need every photon of light. Bright white reads sharp and clean.

    When to soften

    Period properties with original cornicing, warm wall colours, south-facing rooms with strong afternoon light. A 'silk white' or 'pure white' softens the contrast and stops the shutters from screaming at the room.

    Stained timber

    Underused, beautifully effective. A walnut or oak stain on a study, library or principal bedroom adds warmth painted finishes can't. It does ask for restraint elsewhere in the room.
